Where to Arrive and Depart

airbus-8607152 1280 For the smoothest experience, we recommend flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and flying out from Zanzibar (ZNZ). It’s always a good idea to arrive a day before your safari starts — long international flights can be tiring, and spending a night in Arusha gives you time to rest and settle in. Arusha is the gateway to all the major parks in Northern Tanzania, including Serengeti and Ngorongoro, so it’s the perfect place to begin your adventure. After your safari, you’ll take a short flight to Zanzibar, where the pace slows down and the beach takes over. Zanzibar has its own international airport with plenty of domestic and international connections, making it easy to head home — or on to your next destination — feeling refreshed and recharged.

For Zanzibar, the best time is also June to October and December to February, when the weather is sunny and warm with minimal rainfall, which is ideal for beach relaxation, swimming, water-based activities, and cultural exploration.

Tour 1 Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Arusha to Lake Manyara: Game Drives in Lake Manyara NP

Overview:
Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha around 8:30 AM, setting out towards the vibrant and diverse Lake Manyara National Park. As you drive through scenic landscapes and arrive for a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch, you’ll enter a park famed for its dense groundwater forest, open floodplains, and the glimmering soda lake that once drew flocks of flamingos. Keep an eye out for many species of birds, primates, buffalos, warthogs, and more. As dusk settles, you’ll head to your lodge or camp to relax and enjoy a warm, delicious dinner.

Approximate transfer time: 2.5 hours (114 km)

About Lake Manyara:
Nestled in the Great Rift Valley just 2 hours from Arusha, Lake Manyara National Park is surrounded by escarpments, sparkling waters, and lush greenery. Ernest Hemingway once called it the "loveliest lake in Africa." The park contains diverse habitats — from thick rainforests and wetlands to savannas and acacia forests. A large part of the park is submerged under water, making game drives shorter compared to other parks.

Lake Manyara is renowned for its unique add-ons like canoeing, treetop walkways, and night drives, which set it apart from Tanzania’s other safari destinations.

Wildlife at Lake Manyara:
The park is famously home to tree-climbing lions, often seen resting on branches. Troops of olive baboons, blue monkeys, and vervet monkeys thrive in the dense forests, while zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, impalas, and buffalo graze in the open plains.

Birdlife is exceptional, with over 400 recorded species. Expect to spot flamingos (in the right season), pelicans, storks, egrets, colorful bee-eaters, hornbills, and raptors like the African fish eagle.

Additional Activities in Lake Manyara:

  • Treetop Canopy Walk: Walk along a 370-meter suspended bridge for a bird’s-eye view of monkeys, birds, and lush forest surroundings.
Duration: 30–45 mins | Price: USD 54 per person
  • Canoeing on Lake Manyara: Glide across the lake’s calm waters (seasonal) for views of hippos, water birds, and Rift Valley landscapes.
Duration: 2.5 hours | Price: USD 74 per person
  • Night Game Drive: Experience the park after dark and search for nocturnal species like genets, civets, bush babies, and possibly hunting lions.
Duration: 2.5 hours | Price: USD 114 per person
  • Village Walk in Mto wa Mbu: Explore this bustling farming town to meet artisans, farmers, and experience local Tanzanian culture.
Duration: 2.5 hours | Price: USD 40 per person
  • Mountain Biking Tour: Ride through farms, banana plantations, and Maasai villages, or descend from the Rift Valley escarpment.
Duration: 2–3 hours | Price: USD 40–65 per person

Where to Sleep:

Tips:

  • Depart Arusha by 8:30 AM to maximize your game drive time.
  • Carry mosquito repellent, especially for forested areas.
  • We highly recommend adding a canoe ride and Mto wa Mbu village tour for a richer experience.
  • Lake Manyara is best known for birdlife, diverse scenery, and unique activities rather than large-scale wildlife sightings.

Day 2 – Manyara to Central Serengeti. Afternoon game drives in Serengeti

Overview:
After an early breakfast, begin your scenic drive toward the world-famous Serengeti National Park, passing through the misty highlands of Karatu and into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It’s a 5-hour journey (192 km) of changing landscapes — from lush farms to sweeping savannahs — before arriving in the Central Serengeti by early afternoon. Known as the Seronera region, this area is teeming with wildlife year-round thanks to the life-giving Seronera River. After lunch, enjoy your first thrilling game drive in the park before settling into your camp or lodge in the wild. Expect to see lions, cheetahs, elephants, and a rich variety of plains game on this unforgettable day.

About Central Serengeti:
Central Serengeti is the beating heart of Tanzania’s safari experience, famous for its vast open plains and home to the annual Great Migration. This area is a stronghold for predator activity and offers some of the best year-round game viewing. Its diverse habitats — swamps, rivers, kopjes, and woodlands — support an incredible range of wildlife. One of its iconic kopjes, known as Simba Kopje, even inspired Disney’s Pride Rock in The Lion King.

At the heart of it lies the Seronera River Valley, often called the Big Cat Capital of Africa, thanks to its dense population of lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Wildlife at Central Serengeti:
The Central Serengeti, particularly the Seronera Valley, is one of the most wildlife-rich areas in all of Africa. This region is a year-round safari hotspot where you’ll often spot large prides of lions basking in the sun or stalking prey through the tall grass. The elusive leopard is frequently seen lounging in acacia trees along the Seronera River, while cheetahs scan the plains for gazelles. Massive herds of elephants roam through the woodlands, often joined by giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and warthogs. The area is also known for its thriving hyena clans, often spotted in the early mornings or near carcasses.
Birdwatchers will be delighted by the variety of species here — from colorful lilac-breasted rollers and Fischer’s lovebirds to ostriches, kori bustards, and martial eagles. The permanent water sources in Seronera draw a constant stream of animals, especially during the dry season, creating excellent game-viewing opportunities throughout the day.

Where to Sleep:

Tips:

  • Be prepared for a bumpy 2-hour gravel stretch as you pass through Ngorongoro.
  • To avoid the 7-hour road journey, consider flying one way (Arusha to Serengeti or back).
  • Keep binoculars and camera handy — the journey is scenic and full of surprises.
  • Don’t miss optional tours en route to Serengeti for added experiences.
  • Carry a light jacket, especially for the cool mornings near the Crater rim.

Day 3–4 – Central Serengeti: Full-Day Game Drives

Overview:
These two days are your window into the soul of the Serengeti — a chance to fully immerse yourself in its vast, wildlife-rich plains. Your schedule is flexible to maximize your safari experience. You can begin with a relaxed breakfast around 8:30 AM before embarking on a full-day game drive with a packed picnic lunch. Alternatively, for those eager to catch the predators at their most active, you can head out on an early morning game drive at 6:00 AM, returning to your accommodation for a late breakfast before an afternoon game drive.
With picnic lunches packed, your primary focus will be the Seronera region. Known as the "Big Cat Capital of Africa," this area is the beating heart of the Serengeti's predator action. Your expert guide will take you to known leopard territories along the Seronera River, where these elusive cats often lounge in acacia trees, or track large prides of lions basking on rocky kopjes. If you're visiting outside the peak migration months, these incredible predator sightings will be the undeniable highlight of your safari. You will also encounter massive herds of elephants, towering giraffes, and a rich variety of plains game like wildebeest and zebras.
These two days are also the perfect time to explore additional activities in Central Serengeti. For an unforgettable and breathtaking experience, consider an optional Hot Air Balloon Safari. Soar silently above the vast plains at sunrise, witnessing the herds of wildebeest and gazelles from a different perspective as the landscape unfolds beneath you. The safari concludes with a classic champagne bush breakfast. For those who want to get closer to the ecosystem, a Walking Safari is an excellent choice. Accompanied by armed rangers and knowledgeable guides, you'll step out of the vehicle to learn about animal tracks, medicinal plants, and the intricate details of the ecosystem up close.
Game drives typically conclude as the sun begins to set, around 5:00–6:00 PM, giving you time to unwind back at your accommodation. You can relax around a campfire, share stories of the day's sightings, and enjoy a warm, delicious dinner under the star-filled African sky.

Additional Activities in Serengeti:

  • Hot Air Balloon Safari – Soar above the Serengeti at sunrise for breathtaking aerial views, followed by a champagne bush breakfast.
Duration: 1 hour | Price: USD 520 per person
  • Walking Safari – Explore the bush on foot with armed rangers and guides, learning about animal tracks, plants, and ecosystems.
Short Walk: 4 hours | USD 45 per person
Long Walk: 6 hours | USD 60 per person

Duration: 45 mins–2 hours | Price: USD 130 per person
  • Research Center Visit (Seronera) – Discover conservation projects, predator behavior, and ecological studies at the Serengeti Research Centre.

Where to Sleep:
Stay at the same camp or lodge as on Day 2 for continuity and comfort.

Tips:

  • For predator action, plan morning and afternoon drives. For wider variety, opt for full-day drives with picnic lunches.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen, and extra camera batteries for long days outdoors.
  • If following the migration, consider spending 1–2 nights at a seasonal migration camp for the best experience.

Day 5 – Central Serengeti Game Drives and Transfer to Ngorongoro/Karatu

Overview:
After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive in the Serengeti, savoring your last encounters with the wildlife-rich plains of the Central region. This is often a great time to spot early-rising predators as they finish their hunts. By late morning, you’ll begin the drive toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with a picnic lunch en route. The journey of about 3–3.5 hours (151 km) gradually shifts from endless savannah to Maasai grazing lands and misty highlands. By evening, you’ll arrive at your lodge perched near the crater rim or in Karatu, setting the stage for tomorrow’s descent into one of the most extraordinary wildlife havens on Earth. This day beautifully transitions you from the vast Serengeti plains to the lush, elevated world of Ngorongoro.

Wildlife:
The morning drive gives you a chance for last glimpses of Serengeti’s iconic wildlife — prides of lions stretching after a night of hunting, leopards lounging in trees, and elephants making their way to water sources. As you leave the Serengeti behind, the scenery transforms into the Ngorongoro highlands, where rolling hills, montane forests, and Maasai villages dominate the landscape. Keep an eye out for birds of prey circling overhead and wildlife moving through the woodlands as you approach the crater.

Additional Activities in Ngorongoro:

  • Visit to Olduvai Gorge Museum – Explore one of the world’s most important paleoanthropological sites, where fossils of early humans were unearthed, shedding light on human evolution.
Duration: 1.5–2 hours | Price: USD 35 per person

Where to Sleep:

Tips:

  • Carry layers — evenings in the crater highlands can be chilly.
  • If time allows, consider a crater rim hike or a Maasai village visit before dinner.
  • Staying on or near the crater rim ensures quick access to the crater floor for the next morning’s game drive.

Day 6 – Ngorongoro Crater Game Drives and Transfer to Tarangire

Overview:
Start the day early with a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater around 6:30–7:00 AM for a 5-hour game drive on the crater floor. The scenery here is unmatched — a vast, enclosed ecosystem alive with black rhinos, lions, elephants, hippos, flamingos, and more. After a scenic picnic lunch at the Hippo Pool, begin the steep ascent out of the crater and continue onward to Karatu or Tarangire. The journey takes around 1.5–2 hours (108 km). By evening, arrive at your lodge or camp, where you can relax and enjoy a hearty dinner. This day is one of the most rewarding and diverse safari experiences of the entire itinerary.

About Ngorongoro Conservation Area:
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ngorongoro is often called Africa’s Garden of Eden. The conservation area is home to the spectacular crater itself and the famous Olduvai Gorge, known as the Cradle of Humanity. Beyond its wildlife, the area also offers cultural immersion with Maasai villages and adventure opportunities such as highland hikes. Expect spectacular views, thriving ecosystems, and a chance to experience both wildlife and human history in one destination. Bird enthusiasts will also find the region rewarding, with opportunities to spot and document diverse species across different habitats.

Wildlife at Ngorongoro Crater:
Ngorongoro boasts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, making it one of the few places where you can potentially spot the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino) in a single game drive. The crater floor is alive with hippos basking in freshwater pools, bull elephants grazing, and large prides of lions patrolling the grasslands. You’ll also find spotted hyenas, golden jackals, and even servals here.
Birdlife is equally stunning — especially between November and April, when migratory birds flock to the crater. Lake Magadi becomes a dazzling pink spectacle with thousands of lesser flamingos, while crowned cranes, augur buzzards, Egyptian geese, and storks dot the skies and wetlands.

Add-on Tours in Ngorongoro:

  • Maasai Village Tour – Meet the Maasai people, experience their dances, customs, and traditions.
Duration: 1–1.5 hours | Price: USD 25 per person
  • Crater Rim Hike – Enjoy a guided walk with panoramic views, learning about local flora, birds, and small wildlife.
Duration: 1 hour | Price: USD 35 per person

Information on Ngorongoro Add-on tours

Where to Sleep:

Tips:

  • Depart by 6:00 AM to beat the crowds and maximize chances of spotting predators in action.
  • Carry a warm jacket — mornings inside the crater can be very cold.
  • Note that toilet facilities are limited on the crater floor — plan accordingly.

Day 7 – Tarangire National Park to Arusha & Flight to Zanzibar

Overview:
Your final safari day begins with breakfast around 7:30–8:00 AM, followed by a half-day game drive in Tarangire National Park. Famous for its towering baobab trees and vast elephant herds, Tarangire offers a memorable farewell with sightings of giraffes, zebras, lions, and more. After the game drive and a packed lunch, you’ll return to Arusha by mid to late afternoon after a 2.5–3 hour (106 km) drive. From there, you’ll catch a 1–1.2 hour flight to Zanzibar, followed by a 1.5 hour transfer to your beach hotel. With your safari chapter complete, the tropical paradise of Zanzibar awaits as the next leg of your East African journey.

About Tarangire:
Often called the hidden gem of the Northern Circuit, Tarangire is a stunning landscape of rolling savannahs, baobab-studded plains, swamps, and woodlands. The lifeblood of the park, the Tarangire River, flows year-round and attracts massive concentrations of wildlife, especially during the dry season. Herds of elephants, wildebeest, and buffalo gather in huge numbers here, alongside Maasai pastoral lands and the scenic backdrop of the Great Rift Valley. Game viewing is excellent, with visibility increasing dramatically during the dry months when animals congregate around water sources.

Wildlife at Tarangire:
Tarangire is best known for its large elephant herds, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, and often seen interacting at close range. Lions, leopards, and cheetahs roam the plains, stalking herds of impala, eland, and oryx. Giraffes stride elegantly through acacia woodlands, while buffalo wallow in muddy pools. The park is also one of East Africa’s top birdwatching destinations, boasting over 500 species. Look out for colorful yellow-collared lovebirds, lilac-breasted rollers, and red-and-yellow barbets. Waterbirds such as saddle-billed storks, African skimmers, and herons thrive along swamps, while raptors like bateleurs and tawny eagles dominate the skies.

Additional Activities in Tarangire:

  • Night Game Drive – Experience Tarangire after dark and search for nocturnal wildlife such as bush babies, civets, and leopards under the starlit sky.

The excitement builds as you approach Tarangire, where the first giant baobabs begin to appear along the road—an unmistakable sign that you’re entering one of Tanzania’s most unique safari landscapes.

Upon arrival, you will embark on a full-day game drive, with a break for a picnic lunch amidst the wilderness. As the sun begins to set, you'll head to your lodge or camp to unwind and enjoy a delicious dinner.
Approximate transfer time: 2-2.5 hours (110 km)

About Tarangire: Tarangire National Park is a hidden gem in Tanzania, often overshadowed by the Serengeti, but offering a unique and authentic safari experience. Its name is derived from the Tarangire River, which flows through the park and is the primary source of water for the wildlife during the dry season, attracting a spectacular concentration of animals. The park's landscape is characterized by its signature baobab trees, which dot the rolling hills and savannah plains, creating a truly iconic African vista.

The park is also home to vast termite mounds and the seasonal swamps that turn into lush, green plains after the rains. The relatively small number of tourists makes Tarangire an excellent destination for those seeking a more secluded and intimate wildlife viewing experience.

Wildlife at Tarangire: Tarangire is best known for its massive elephant herds, particularly during the dry season (June–October) when the Tarangire River becomes a magnet for wildlife. You might witness dozens of elephants — including playful calves — congregating near the water or scratching themselves on giant baobab trees. Predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs are often seen trailing the movements of antelope herds, including impala, oryx, and eland. Giraffes stride across the savannah, and buffalo often wallow in muddy ponds to escape the midday heat.
Tarangire is also a birdwatcher’s haven with over 500 species recorded. The park is especially vibrant during the wet season (November–April), when migratory birds from Europe and Asia arrive, joining resident species. From colorful lovebirds and lilac-breasted rollers to vast flocks of queleas and soaring eagles, Tarangire offers unforgettable birdlife year-round, with its peak diversity seen in the migration months.

Additional Activities in Tarangire:

  • Night Game Drives
Experience the thrill of a nocturnal safari and spot elusive creatures like bush babies, civets, and leopards under the moonlight (available at select accommodations).
    Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours
Price: USD 100-200 depending on accommodation

  • Walking Safari (Inside Park or Private Concessions)
Explore Tarangire on foot with a professional ranger and learn about tracks, plants, and animal behavior.
    Duration: About 3 hours
    Price: USD 45 per person

Where to Sleep:

Tips:

  • Depart Arusha by 7:30 AM to make the most of your day.
  • Carry mosquito repellent, especially in the forest zones.
  • Tsetse flies are present in Tarangire, particularly in wooded and riverine areas. Wear light-colored clothing (avoid dark blue & black), use insect repellent, and consider long sleeves & trousers during drives in dense bush.

Day 2 – Tarangire to Central Serengeti. Afternoon game drives in Serengeti
Overview: The drive from Tarangire to Serengeti takes about 6–7 hours (or around 4 hours if overnighting in Karatu) and is a true safari adventure. After enjoying breakfast at your lodge, you will depart with packed lunchboxes for the journey ahead.

The road first leads through lively villages and fertile farmlands, passing the bustling town of Mto wa Mbu and skirting the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment. From here, the route climbs into the Ngorongoro Highlands, with their lush slopes and winding roads that reveal sweeping views of both the Rift Valley and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Beyond this point, the smooth highway gives way to gravel and dirt tracks as the road descends into the Ngorongoro lowlands. This stretch, about 1.5 hours long, can be bumpy, dusty, and hot, especially around midday. Still, the journey is far from dull—you’ll pass Maasai herders, traditional bomas, and cattle, with chances of spotting occasional wildlife like an ostrich or a giraffe along the way. Around this time, you’ll pause to enjoy your picnic lunch at a scenic spot before continuing into the Serengeti.

As you cross into the endless Serengeti plains, the first wildlife sightings often come soon after entering the gate. From there, the road transforms into a game drive itself, with opportunities to spot the Serengeti’s rich wildlife en route. By late afternoon, you’ll make your way toward your lodge, aiming to arrive before 6:00 PM, where a warm dinner awaits to close your day’s journey.

About Central Serengeti: The beating heart of a magnificent ecosystem, Central Serengeti is the best place to go on a safari in Tanzania, known for its vast open plains and home to the annual Great Migration. This area is a stronghold for predator activity and offers some of the best year-round game viewing. The area possesses a variety of habitats, ranging from swamps and rivers to kopjes and thick woodlands, which in turn nurture a variety of fauna.

The famed Seronera River Valley is also located in the southern part of Central Serengeti. It is referred to as the Big Cat Capital of Africa, owing to its dense population of big cats.

Day 3 - Central Serengeti to North Serengeti. En-route game drives
Overview: After an early breakfast, you will set out with packed lunch boxes and begin your day with morning game drives in the wildlife-rich Central Serengeti (Seronera region). By late morning, the journey continues north, a scenic drive of about 3.5 to 5 hours. As you leave the open plains behind, the landscape gradually shifts to more hilly and rugged terrain, signaling your approach to the far north.

Your destination is the Kogatende region, famed for the dramatic Mara River—the stage for the spectacular wildebeest river crossings during the Great Migration. Along the way, you’ll stop for a picnic lunch and enjoy sightings of resident wildlife such as zebras, topi, and gazelles that dot the route.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive in the North Serengeti, with time for a short game drive near the Mara River before heading to your lodge or camp for the evening.
Approximate transfer time: 4.5 hours (103 km).

About North Serengeti: The North Serengeti is one of the park’s most dramatic and untouched regions, best known as the setting for the legendary Great Migration river crossings at the Mara River. Between July and October, vast herds of wildebeest and zebra surge into this area, making it a focal point of the safari calendar.

Geographically, the north offers a striking contrast to the open plains of the central Serengeti. The landscape transitions into rolling hills, rocky outcrops, and lush river valleys, with the Mara River cutting a deep channel through the wilderness. This mix of rugged terrain and permanent water sources creates a uniquely scenic backdrop, distinct from anywhere else in the Serengeti.

With fewer lodges and camps than other regions, the north retains a sense of remoteness and wilderness, where sweeping views of undisturbed landscapes add to the atmosphere of adventure and exclusivity.

Wildlife at North Serengeti: While the main attraction is the Great Migration during its peak season (typically July to early October), the North Serengeti has a significant resident population year-round. You can spot leopards and lions in the kopjes and woodlands, as well as large herds of buffalo and elephants throughout the year. The Mara River is home to massive Nile crocodiles and hippos. The open plains support herds of giraffes, zebras, elands, and various antelope species.

Where to Sleep:

  • Economy: Tanzania Bush Camps, Kogatende, North Serengeti – A classic mobile tented camp offering an authentic and comfortable bush experience close to the Great Migration action.
  • Standard: Sero Tented Camps, Kogatende, North Serengeti – A comfortable tented camp that balances rustic charm with modern comforts and amenities like 24-hour electricity and Wi-Fi.
  • Superior: Malaika Mara River Luxury Camp - Luxury Tent, North Serengeti – A luxurious camp with elegantly appointed tents and prime location by the Mara River, offering a front-row seat to the migration.
  • Premium: Mara Mara Tented Lodge, North Serengeti – A stylish and intimate tented lodge with spacious suites, a swimming pool, and excellent views of the surrounding plains.
  • Luxury: Nimali Mara Camp - Luxury Tented Suite, North Serengeti – An ultra-luxurious camp featuring contemporary design, private plunge pools, and a serene setting amidst the rocky kopjes of the northern Serengeti.

Tips:

  • Leave Central Serengeti early to allow enough time for en-route game drives and a relaxed arrival in the north.
  • The drive can be long (4–5 hours) on mixed terrain — keep snacks, water, and a neck pillow handy.
  • Watch out for shifting landscapes: from open plains to hilly, rugged terrain as you head north.
  • Keep your camera ready near the Mara River — early sightings of wildebeest crossings or resident crocodiles are possible.
  • Expect cooler evenings in the north compared to Central Serengeti, so pack a light jacket.

Day 4 – North Serengeti. Full day game drives
Overview: After breakfast at the camp, your day begins with a game drive through the plains of the Northern Serengeti. Soon, you’ll encounter the vanguard of the migration—vast herds of wildebeest and zebra stretching across the savanna, their calls filling the air. Watching them graze and intermingle is an awe-inspiring sight.

As you approach the Mara River, anticipation builds. Herds gather on the banks, restless and hesitant, sensing the dangers of crocodiles and strong currents. This is a waiting game, a test of patience as you watch the wildebeest gather on the riverbank. Then, with sudden courage, the first animals leap, sparking a chaotic cascade as thousands follow. It’s a raw and electrifying spectacle of survival.

While waiting for the crossing to take place, we usually have our lunch in the vehicle itself. The afternoon takes you deeper into the northern reaches, following the herds and seeking other wildlife like lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, topi, and various antelope species before returning to camp by 6 PM.

Where to Sleep:
Same camp/lodge as Day 3

Tips:

  • Be patient. River crossings are unpredictable and can take hours to occur. Your guide will use their knowledge and network to find the best spots.
  • If river crossing is a top priority, travel between Late July to Mid September and plan for at least 2–3 nights at North Serengeti.
  • Wear layers, as mornings can be cool and the midday sun intense.
  • Bring a high-quality camera with a telephoto lens to capture the action.
  • If you are doing a hot air balloon safari, this morning is a good time for it.
  • To reduce road transfer time by about 11 hours, you can fly from Arusha to North Serengeti on day 1 and start safari.

Day 5 – North Serengeti to Central Serengeti. Morning game drives
Overview: After breakfast, you will have a final morning game drive in the North Serengeti before beginning your journey back towards the Central region. If we were unlucky in spotting a river crossing the previous day, this morning gives us another opportunity. We eventually depart around noon from North Serengeti and gradually proceed to our accommodation in Central Serengeti with enroute game drives.

The en-route game drives will offer continuous wildlife viewing as you travel through the changing terrain. The drive will take you through the Lobo Valley's hilly country and woodlands before arriving back in the Seronera plains. This is your second chance to immerse yourself in the world of the Central Serengeti's legendary predators. You can look out for large prides of lions, elusive leopards in their favorite trees, and cheetahs on the plains. The Seronera River attracts a diverse range of animals, including elephants, hippos, and various antelope species, making it a guaranteed wildlife-rich experience. We plan to reach the accommodation before 6:00 PM.
Approximate transfer time: 4.5 hours (100 km)

Where to Sleep:
Same camp/lodge as Day 2

Tips:

  • Keep an eye out for a final glimpse of the migrating herds as you move south.
  • The transition from the hilly north to the open central plains offers a beautiful contrast in scenery.

The area boasts a high density of wildlife, with some 30,000 animals sheltered on the crater floor. It also has a profound historical significance, being home to Olduvai Gorge, a key paleoanthropological site.

Wildlife at Ngorongoro Conservation Area: As you travel into the conservation area, you will begin to see a shift in wildlife. While the crater floor itself is the main attraction, the surrounding highlands are home to a variety of animals, including elephants, buffalo, and a variety of bird species. Overview: On the final day of your safari, you will have an early start to experience one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders. After a quick and energizing breakfast, you will make an early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, a magnificent caldera that serves as a self-contained ecosystem. The 5-hour game drive on the crater floor will be an action-packed experience. Your expert guide will take you on a journey through diverse habitats, from open grasslands to freshwater springs and a soda lake. The sheer density of wildlife here is staggering, and you'll have an excellent chance of spotting the famous "Big 5," including the critically endangered black rhino. You will have a scenic picnic lunch at the beautiful Hippo Pool, where you can watch hippos and birds in their natural habitat.

Post-lunch, you will begin a steep ascent to the top exit of the crater, with a final breathtaking panoramic view of the natural wonder you've just explored. This is the last leg of your safari, with a drive back to Arusha. Upon arrival by 6:00 PM, you will be dropped off at your preferred location or the airport. With an incredible experience and loads of cherished memories, this is the time you bid goodbye to your safari team and prepare for the next leg of your journey.

Where to Sleep:

Tips:

  • Best months to visit: December–March and June–October.
  • Carry light clothing, sunscreen, and reef-safe swimwear.
  • For cultural immersion, consider spending a night in Stone Town before heading to the beaches.

If you prefer to shorten the safari portion of your trip, one option is to remove Tarangire National Park and add an extra day in Zanzibar, keeping the overall Tanzania Safari + Zanzibar tour at 10 days(tour 8). Alternatively, you can opt for a shorter 9-day itinerary, as outlined below(tour 9).

Tour 8: 10 Days Ndutu Migration safari (5 nights) & Zanzibar (4 nights)

Tour 9: 9 Days Ndutu Migration safari (5 nights) & Zanzibar (3 nights)

The 9-day plan is ideal if you arrive at JRO on Day 1 and depart from Zanzibar on Day 10. This allows you to spend your first day relaxing in Arusha, begin your safari on Day 2, and conclude the tour in Zanzibar on your final day.

Price Breakdown for a 10-Day Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Tour

When planning your safari and Zanzibar getaway, it helps to understand how the overall cost is structured. Here’s a simplified breakdown:

Safari Landcruiser, Fuel & Guide: ~USD 300 per day

  • This fee covers the Landcruiser rental, fuel, professional guide, driver’s allowance, vehicle park fees, and 18% VAT.

  • While the rate may seem high, it reflects the true cost of operations:

  • A new Toyota Landcruiser (specially converted for safaris) costs around USD 110,000 in Tanzania.

  • High maintenance due to rough roads, fuel, insurance, and guide salaries add up.

  • It typically takes 6–8 years for a tour operator to recover the investment on one vehicle.

  • Prices may rise slightly in peak season (July–August) and drop in low season (March–May).

  • At Monkey Adventures, our rate of ~USD 300 per day already includes overheads, VAT, and margins, so there are no hidden costs.

Park Fees: ~USD 1,000 per person (Tour 1 for 2 travelers)

  • Statutory park fees in Tanzania are significant and vary depending on the parks visited, season, and type of accommodation.

  • For Tour 1 (without basic camping), the average cost works out to about USD 1,000 per person for a 10-day trip (2025 rates).

  • Luxury Lodges: Can exceed USD 1,000 per person per night in peak season (dropping to ~USD 400 per person per night in low season).

  • Prices fluctuate more for luxury properties, meaning the same budget can get you mid-tier stays in peak season or luxury stays in low season.

Domestic Flights: USD 220–500 per person

  • Since Zanzibar is an island, flights are necessary:

  • Arusha to Zanzibar: ~USD 220 per person.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. When is the best time for a 10 days Tanzania safari + Zanzibar beach tour? The ideal time for a safari in Tanzania is from June to October, during the dry season. Wildlife viewing is at its best, especially with the Great Migration river crossings in the Serengeti from July to September, and conditions are perfect for game drives and photography. Another great period is January to March, known for the calving season in Ndutu, with plenty of predator action. For Zanzibar, the best time is also June to October and December to February, when the weather is sunny and warm with minimal rainfall, which is ideal for beach relaxation, swimming, water-based activities, and cultural exploration. Thus, the best time for a combined Tanzania safari + Zanzibar beach tour is from July to October (Peak Season), and January to February (Shoulder season).

2. Can I customize my 10-day safari + beach itinerary? Yes, you can certainly customize your 10-day safari + beach itinerary. We offer a ton of customization options to make your safari experience personal and intimate. You can choose locations, accommodation preferences, mode of transport, add-ons including cultural, historical, and water-based activities, and much more. You can contact your sales consultant for more details.

3. Can I add extra days before/after the safari in Arusha or at Zanzibar? Yes, you can add extra days before/after the safari in Arusha or at Zanzibar. This will give you sufficient time to explore these cities thoroughly and experience warm Tanzanian hospitality. However, we do recommend visiting Zanzibar after your safari so you can relax and enjoy the beaches.

4. Is 10 days the ideal duration for a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar tour? Yes, 10 days is an excellent duration for a combined Tanzania safari and Zanzibar tour. This timeline allows you to experience the highlights of Tanzania’s world-renowned national parks—such as Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire—followed by several days of relaxation on the enchanting beaches of Zanzibar. With 10 days, you’ll have enough time to enjoy immersive wildlife encounters, participate in guided game drives, and unwind on Zanzibar’s white sands without feeling rushed. This balanced itinerary gives you a well-rounded experience of both adventure and relaxation, making it a popular choice for many travelers.

5. Can I do a group tour for 10 days to cover Tanzania safari + Zanzibar? Yes, although you can do a group tour for the safari portion of the tour, there are no options for group tours for the Zanzibar leg of the journey. We offer scheduled group departures where you’ll join other travelers for the safari portion of the journey. Group tours are a great way to enjoy a sociable atmosphere, benefit from cheaper prices, and have expert guides to enrich your experience. However, schedules of group tours are fixed, rarely offering any options for customization. Whether you’re a solo traveler or a couple, joining a group tour is a convenient and enjoyable way to explore both Tanzania’s wildlife and landscapes.

6. How much does a 10 days combined Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package cost? The cost for a 10 days combined Tanzania safari and Zanzibar package depends on a lot of factors such as accommodation type, mode of transportation, additional activities, season, locations visited, etc. For reference, the price of a Classic Safari including parks such as Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara + Zanzibar for a party of 2 in June with a Standard 4x4 Safari Land Cruiser can range from USD 3,100 to USD 14,100 per person, depending on the accommodation tier. You can explore our listed tours here and apply filters based on your preferences to get prices, or you can call your sales consultant for a free quote.

7. Do you recommend covering the parks in North Tanzania or South Tanzania for a safari + Zanzibar tour? Choosing between the Northern and Southern safari circuits depends on what you wish to experience in your safari tour. While the Northern safari circuit is well-suited for first-time safari goers, the Southern circuit offers a more adventurous experience, making it appealing for repeat visitors. Both have plenty of wildlife and beautiful landscapes.

The Northern circuit has a well-developed safari and tourism infrastructure, ensuring that it is easily accessible by road from Arusha and has a wide range of accommodation types. It is famous for its iconic landscapes, such as the Ngorongoro crater, which also hosts a high concentration of wildlife and all of the Big Five, and unique wildlife phenomena such as the Great Migration in the Serengeti. However, the Northern circuit is more crowded than the Southern circuit.

The Southern circuit, on the other hand, offers a more private, secluded, and raw safari experience. Since the wildlife is not accustomed to human presence, safaris are much more up-close and personal. The parks are huge and host a wide range of gorgeous habitats. It is not as accessible as the Northern circuit, and travelling from Dar es Salaam by road takes hours, making the option of flying in more appealing. Since the safari and tourism infrastructure is not well-developed in this circuit, the roads are often rough, and accommodation types are limited.

8. Can I start & end the Tanzania safari + Zanzibar tour from Zanzibar airport? Yes, you can start & end the Tanzania safari + Zanzibar tour from Zanzibar airport. However, all safaris to the Northern Circuit parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, etc.) start at Arusha, which is the base for all safaris heading to these parks. The closest airport to Arusha is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which is around 1 hour away from Arusha by road. We recommend our clients to arrive at this airport. However, if you are arriving at Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ), then you will have to take a connecting flight to Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and we can arrange the airport transfer accordingly.

You can read more about getting to Arusha here.

After the safari portion of your tour, your next destination would be Zanzibar, for which you will take a connecting flight from Arusha to Zanzibar. Zanzibar has a well-connected international airport, and you can directly depart to your next destination from there.

Thus, you can start & end your Tanzania safari + tour at Zanzibar Airport.

9. Are internal flights for connecting the safari leg of the tour with Zanzibar included? Yes, the prices shown in the tour pages are inclusive of the flight connecting from Arusha to Zanzibar as mentioned in the itinerary and inclusions. You can check the inclusions/exclusions list in each tour for a detailed list of inclusions and exclusions applicable in that tour. You can also opt to reroute the itinerary and fly out of Serengeti into Zanzibar at additional cost.

10. Can I fly from Serengeti to Zanzibar (instead of Arusha to Zanzibar). How much extra does it cost? Yes, you can fly directly from Serengeti to Zanzibar one-way instead of Arusha to Zanzibar at an additional cost of USD 350+ per person.

11. How long is the flight from Arusha to Zanzibar or Serengeti to Zanzibar? The flight time from Arusha to Zanzibar takes approximately 1 - 1.15 hours, while the flight from Serengeti to Zanzibar takes approximately 2.5 - 3 hours.

12. Is Tanzania safari + Zanzibar holiday a good idea for honeymooners? A Tanzania safari + Zanzibar holiday is not only a good idea but also a popular option for honeymooners because it serves as a perfect combination of adventure and romance. As you explore the stunning landscapes of Tanzania while encountering a diverse range of wildlife, this safari brings you and your partner closest to nature itself, offering an intimate experience. Couples can expect to spot the Big Five, witness world-famous wildlife spectacles like the Great Migration, and then unwind and relax on the beaches of Zanzibar. A honeymoon safari in Tanzania offers privacy, exclusivity, and a sense of adventure, with options for private tours, luxurious lodges, and personalized experiences. Tanzania’s rich culture and warm hospitality further enhance its appeal for newlyweds seeking both excitement and intimacy in a unique setting.

Our spacious and robust 4x4 Land Cruisers and friendly guides ensure a comfortable and knowledgeable safari experience. The friendly local people, educational opportunities, and the chance to see the Big Five and much more make Tanzania a memorable bonding experience for your family.

14. Do I need to pre-book activities at Zanzibar? You can explore the activities available in Zanzibar here, and contact your sales consultant for additional information or any queries that you may have.

15. Can I arrange the Zanzibar portion directly and book only the safari part with you? Yes, you can arrange the Zanzibar portion directly and book only the safari part with us. Zanzibar is part of the United Republic of Tanzania, so the same tourist visa you obtain for mainland Tanzania also covers entry into Zanzibar. Most travelers can get a visa on arrival or apply for an e-Visa before departure, valid for up to 90 days. Ensure your passport has at least six months’ validity from your date of entry and at least one blank page for the visa stamp. Always check for the latest requirements before your trip, as regulations can change

17. Do I need any vaccinations/insurance for visiting Tanzania + Zanzibar?

While there are no mandatory vaccines for travelers coming directly from most countries, a Yellow Fever vaccination is required if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission or if you have a layover longer than 12 hours in such a country. Routine immunizations like Influenza and COVID-19 are also advised. Consult your doctor or a travel clinic for personalized advice and ensure vaccinations are up to date before travel.

Regarding Insurance, the Government of Zanzibar has introduced a mandatory inbound travel insurance requirement for all foreign visitors to Zanzibar, effective October 1, 2024. All travelers must have valid travel insurance for their stay and this needs to be purchased from the exclusive partner Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).

This costs USD 44 per person and is valid for 92 consecutive days from the day of arrival at Zanzibar.

You can apply for the insurance from the official website here: https://visitzanzibar.go.tz/
